Speedway, Ind. — Jeff Gordon grew up in Pittsboro, Indiana and won the inaugural Brickyard in 1994. Kevin Harvick was on the pole at the start of the festivities on Sunday, but it didn’t take long for Indiana’s adopted son to show who was going to have more horsepower on this Sunday.
Gordon – who is actually from Vallejo, California – has been stuck on four titles since the 2001 Winston Cup. Meanwhile, teammate Jimmie Johnson is continuing to build a dynasty by winning six titles and going after his seventh currently.
Sunday was Jeff Gordon’s day. Rick Hendrick told him it would be his day. Going into Sunday, Gordon and Johnson were tied with four wins apiece at the Brickyard. But now, Gordon stands alone with five. Gordon is the only driver with five wins at Indy.
Last year’s winner, Ryan Newman, was unable to defend his title and finished in eleventh place.
Other notables from Indianapolis: Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished in ninth place on Sunday and is second in points behind Gordon.
The series moves on to Pocono for the GoBowling.com 400 where Earnhardt Jr. looks for a sweep of Pocono.
