On Wednesday night, the Detroit Tigers honored New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter with some gifts to help him remember his playing career in Michigan. Jeter, who grew up playing for Kalamazoo Central and was the 1992 High School Player of the Year, will retire at the end of the 2014 season. The Tigers presented him with memorabilia such as seats 1 and 2 from the old Tiger Stadium and a painting of him playing in Michigan at three separate parts of his career. Former Yankees teammates Phil Coke and Joba Chamberlain also gave a donation to Jeter’s Turn Two Foundation.
Even though this writer might not like the Yankees, Jeter has earned respect from many non-Yankees fans by playing the game the right way and treating the media with class.
