South Bend, Indiana. On Saturday afternoon September 4, instead of playing its normal cupcake preseason schedule, the Purdue Boilermakers decided to give themselves an early exam. For most of the game, Purdue looked hopeless under their second year head coach Danny Hope. Meanwhile, it was the boys from the northern end of the state who sent a resounding pounding to West Lafayette. It was also the debut of new Irish head coach Brian Kelly. The luck of the Irish apparently is about to change. Last year, it was the Irish who were woeful under the NFL regime of Mr. Charlie Weiss. The Boiler defense looked like a derailment waiting to happen as the Notre Dame offense destroyed the proud Big 10 defense. Before the Boilers woke up, Notre Dame had scored on its first possession. This game was for the Shillelagh Trophy. Final score Notre Dame 23, Purdue 12.
