Austin Cindric shocked the world, including me, on Sunday. I thought Kyle Larson was going to etch his name on the Harley J. Earl Trophy. But he did not. Instead, 23 year old Austin Cindric became the first rookie to win the Daytona 500, driving Brad Keselowski’s and Rusty Wallace’s old car. Keselowski is now a team owner, and Wallace is now an analyst for MRN. Cindric’s car owner was having a birthday on Sunday. Roger Penske, who is also known as the Captain, is now 85 years old. Cindric became the first driver this year to make the playoffs.
Now a look ahead to Auto Club Speedway in southern California next week. Kyle Larson will make amends for what he didn’t get done at Daytona, but keep an eye on the number 2. He has a chance to build on his points lead. Hendrick Motorsports did not have a good day on Sunday, but it’s only one race. There are 36 races in the season and last year Kyle Larson won 10 races. Don’t underestimate Cliff Daniels and Kyle Larson. I predict when they open Auto Club Speedway, Kyle Larson will be a threat to be reckoned with. He might even get the pole. Joey Logano will challenge for the pole, too. Mr. Penske, this is only one race, so you better tell the rookie that he will be in for a long test.
