Friday afternoon, we had unprecedented access to the AM 1660 studio in Fargo, and we got a glimpse of how the Bison Insiders are run. Jeremiahboyce.com sat down with Sam Neidermann to talk with a fellow Hoosier. Sam hails from Fishers, Indiana, which is a suburb of Indianapolis. He started the Fishers Sports Network when he was in high school to broadcast high school games. He was a member of the speech team for four years, where he honed his smooth radio voice. He graduated from the institution in Bloomington, Indiana. He then went to Selma, Alabama, where he called games for a small radio station. Before the journey took Neidermann to Fargo, he worked at Stony Brook University in New York. He knows the venerable voice of the IU Hoosiers, Don Fischer. His favorite sportscasters are Ian Eagle from CBS Sports, Marty Brennaman, the voice of the Cincinnati Reds, and Vern Lundquist, who used to be with CBS Sports until he retired. When Sam was asked who his favorite announcer to work with was, he said the former Buffalo Bill, Phil Hansen, stating “he’s a hoot”!

When asked what to watch for in this year’s edition of NDSU football, he said the quarterback, and the offensive and defensive lines. He said the Bison would be pretty good running the ball and playing with heart. August 29 is the first broadcast with Learfield, when the Bison meet Jacksonville State at the Dome.

Sam also has basketball broadcast responsibilities for the Bison, but his favorite sport is the one that he is calling at the time. Football has one game per week, whereas basketball has multiple games per week. Neidermann stated “nothing compares to football.”
