After beating Denver 4-3 in overtime on Friday night on a Jordan Kawaguchi goal, the number one team in the land was in for a big surprise. And on Tuesday afternoon, the Denver Pioneers gave the Hawks humble pie, and scored two quick goals to grab the lead on #1 UND 2-0. The final score was Pies 3, Hawks 2. This was #1 UND’s first setback of the year. The Pies hadn’t won a game yet this season, and they were rated number 9 in the country. The games are being played in Baxter Arena in Omaha, Nebraska, where North Dakota is being put in a pod, which means they play five different teams five times, including Minnesota Duluth. They will play UMD like a regular weekend series beginning at 7:30 on Friday night. This is the first time that UND and UMD will meet this year. It also was Brad Berry’s 200th game as bench boss of the Hawks. For those of you who thought UND was going to be a cake walk winner of the whole pod, you got severely surprised. If anything, this shows you that just because you might have a number in front of your name, especially if it is #1, you can’t be full of yourself and think with overconfidence, which is what happened to the Fighting Hawks on Tuesday afternoon. Just because a team has an 0-3 record, doesn’t mean if you don’t come ready to play, they can’t give you pies in the face.
