Speedway, Indiana. Every May is special, but this May is extra special because it marks the centennial of one of the great American traditions, the Indianapolis 500. Will it be Helio Castroneves, or will it be the centennial pole-sitter Alex Tagliani that will their name forever etched in history as the winner of the 100th Indy 500? Sixteenth and Georgetown has special meaning for many Hoosiers, including the writer of this piece. On Sunday, August 5, 2001, I got my first taste of racing at the Speedway, being from a small town an hour north of Indianapolis. That race was stock car drivers descending on the yard of bricks for the Brickyard 400. Who would have ever dreamed that I would become a member of the large press corps that focuses in on the state of Indiana and the circle city every May?
