On Thursday afternoon, we had a chance to catch up with the main reason why the Bismarck Bobcats are surging in the standings, and are now only one point behind the Minot nameless hockey team. We interviewed the 16 year old phenom, Cameron Korpi. We talked about everything from high school to hockey, even the Bench Boss Layne Sedevie. Korpi is from South Lyon, Michigan, which is 40 minutes from one of the NHL’s hotbeds for hockey, Detroit. We asked the young up and coming star to compare South Lyon to Bismarck, North Dakota. Korpi said that South Lyon and Bismarck are the same size, and are very similar in the way they are put together as towns. We also touched on what it’s like having a coach who played the same position as Cameron is charged with playing with the Bobcats. He said that goalies have a once a week meeting with Sedevie, and he works on hand-eye coordination, because that is the way goalies get the feel for the vulcanized rubber. It is the defensive pairings’ job to keep the net area clean for Cameron. He had a streak of 126 minutes and 53 seconds without allowing a goal, but as is the case with everything, when you play the champs, every streak has to die, especially when you play a team like Aberdeen that is still smoking hot and who refuses to cool off. Cameron has the ability to join names such as Ryan Farragher and Hunter Shepherd, who have guided the Cats to big playoff moments, such as six Central Division titles and one national championship. The sky is the limit for Cameron if the defense can help him by hitting people who are absolute pests and who like to muck up Cameron’s area and make it hard for the phenom to see pucks. Because if he sees it, he will stop it. The Bobcats’ defense needs to quit turning over the puck, and allowing pests to have it. Cameron has the ability to win several goalie of the month awards if the Bobcats play with team unity and follow the game plan their fearless leader Coach Sedevie has shown them in practice. Cameron does not use a notebook. Instead, he relies on his ears and his memory when it comes to Coach Sedevie and what he is trying to teach the young man. During our interview, Cameron was well spoken and beyond his years when it came to understanding the media.
